Cardiology department was first established as CCU (coronary care unit) Unit in Peoples Medical College Hospital, Nawabshah in 1974 and then after upgraded to full-fledged cardiology department.

At present the department has total 40 beds including a CCU, step down unit and general male / female ward. Department serves patients from more than six districts of Sindh province. Indoor facilities are being provided to approximately 4000 patients annually besides outdoor (OPD) facility which is being provided to about 15000 to 18000 patients per year.

The cardiology department is equipped with the state of art Echocardiography laboratory including facilities of tissue Doppler and DSE. Echocardiography department provides echo services to about 6000 to 8000 patients per year which includes both adult and pediatric patients.

The department is being supervised by qualified faculty equipped with teaching facilities for under graduate students of MBBS and postgraduate students of Diploma in Cardiology and MD in Cardiology. We also impart training to ECG technicians. Our unit has seminar room, reading room and e- library.

Various research projects are in pipeline through this department and few have been already completed and published in peer review journals.

IIn near future department will be upgraded to provide tertiary cardiac services including TEE, Coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty, pacemaker services and hopefully cardiac surgery services.

Planned projects in near future

1. Establishment of weekly Hypertension clinic

2. Establishment of separate TEE room

3. Establishment of Catheterization laboratory and 10 bedded new CCU.

Future vision

Establishment of Cardiology institute having all facilities for advanced learning, research and clinical facilities like: clinical cardiology, noninvasive cardiology, nuclear cardiology, interventional cardiology, pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery.
